EXCERPTS FROM THEIR WEBSITE: Officially started in 1982, the mission was prosperous and thriving. The "oil bust," however, of the late 1980s and early 1990s severly damaged the economy of Houston and the mission suffered terribly, having to close its doors and sell off property in the early 1990s after a long struggle to survive.
In 1998, having no knowledge of the previous St Michael Mission, a small group of Orthodox Christians living in Humble, Texas (northeast of Houston) under the lay leadership contacted representatives of the Diocese of the South to inquire about starting a mission of the Orthodox Church in America in the Houston area.
In March, 2004, the Mission moved into a one-hundred year old building on the historic Main Street of downtown Humble, Texas. A movement is currently afoot to locate property on which to build a proper Orthodox Temple.
